Who Lives Without Good Weatherstripping?

11/29/2014 Back To Blog

If you aim at better garage door insulation, having good weather seals is not an option - it's a must. The great news is that weather seals have many more benefits. They are not simply useful for the isolation of air drafts but also for the isolation of noises and the protection of the door. So, when it comes to choosing between more frequent garage door replacement and more frequent weather seals replacement which one would you choose? Although there are many types on the market, their cost is low and so you won't only spend less but also be sure that your overhead door will last longer. In the meantime you will be enjoying a good indoor environment.

The benefits of weather seals

If you observe garage doors closed and without weather seals, you'll distinguish some tiny gaps in between the door and the jamb. These gaps are unavoidable and perfectly covered by the seals. Seals are made of soft rubber materials and so you will not have a problem closing the door. They won't be an obstruction. In fact, they are designed specifically for that purpose. They are installed at the side, top and bottom parts of the door and their replacement might range from easy to relatively hard depending on the weather strip. If there is an aluminum frame at the bottom door part, the seal is inserted in there. Some adhere but usually need to be nailed as well.

The most important is to ensure that the bottom seal is in good condition. Hard rubber seals last longer than softer ones and they are usually perfect for wood garage doors. Steel doors usually have an astragal in U shape where a T-seal is inserted. The benefits are enormous.

  • No more drafts coming in from the gaps or losing slowly energy
  • The noise will be isolated, too
  • The material of the door will be protected and there won't be cracks and damage at the edges
  • The bottom seal will also keep insects and elements from coming into your garage and so you won't deal with such problems either

Weather seals are excellent solutions and inexpensive ones as well!
